The Port of Tyne encompasses a number of sites regarded as culturally important including Tynemouth Pier & Lighthouse and the Swing Bridge at Newcastle upon Tyne.
Both the North and South Piers have been designated as Sites of Scientific Interest and the Port continually liaises with English Nature about these areas. In addition, an area of land at Jarrow Slake has been gifted by the Port of Tyne to South Tyneside Council to provide a natural wildlife zone between the Port and the River Don.
The Port of Tyne maintains the mechanisms of the Swing Bridge at Newcastle upon Tyne; built by Sir W. G. Armstrong in 1876 the bridge is still in perfect working order and swung on request from river traffic.

Tynemouth Lighthouse and the Swing Bridge are open to the public every September during Heritage Open Days, allowing a limited number of visitors to explore these interesting properties.
