The Port’s International Passenger Terminal is well equipped to handle a wide variety of cruise calls and a team of friendly trained tourist information staff do their very best to provide a warm welcome to the cruise passengers and ensure every guest has a great experience in our region. 

The modern passenger terminal restaurant and shop offers a welcome break for travellers in the passenger lounge, other upgrades at the terminal include a new cash point facility.

The passenger lounge provides seating for 800 with 9 cruise and 6 ferry check-in desks and has capacity for 2,000 passengers in a turnaround call.

The Port operate two main cruise ship berths, a secure car parking within minutes’ walk and automated baggage handling.

With high security (ISPS Restricted Area) including Customs and Immigration and just a short walk from Royal Quays shopping outlet with bars, restaurants and cash points, the Port's International Passenger Terminal offers easy access into the centre of Newcastle.

Berths:

NORTHUMBRIAN QUAY

Size: Can accommodate vessels up to 300m

Location: North Side; River Tyne (Chart BA 1934) 54° 59.6'N 001°26.8'W Distance to Sea 2.2 miles

Dimensions: Length 335 metres, Depth 9.0 metres, Quay Height 6.7 m (at Chart Datum)

WHITEHILL POINT

Size: Vessel Length 215m LOA.

Location: North Side; - River Tyne 54° 59.3'N 001°27.3'W (Chart BA 1934) Distance to Sea 2.5 miles
Dimensions: Berth Length 108 metres (93m Quay plus dolphins, Depth 8.6 metres, Quay Height 6.7 metres (at Chart Datum)

RO RO BERTHS

Ro Ro No. 3 Depth 7.1m dual linkspan bridge for stern loading and discharging 31m x 5.9m
Ro Ro No. 4 Depth 7.5m dual link span bridge for stern loading and discharging 10.4m x 60.4m

Vessels in excess of 350 metres have been handled on the Tyne, but the practical limit is the 360m diameter turning circle at Jarrow (3.5 miles from the sea) allowing vessels up to 300m to be swung by tug

Gangways:

  • 20m, 14.5m and 12 metres gangway are available

Pilots/Tugs:

  • Three tugs (70, 42, & 36 tonnes pull) are stationed on the Tyne at 3 hours notice
  • Additional tugs (should they be necessary) can be arranged with reasonable notice
  • Experienced Pilots available 24/7 at two hours notice

Depths:

Main channel maintained depth of 10.0 metres, this allows:

  • Vessels up to 9.0 metres to enter virtually without restriction
  • Vessels up to 11.0 metres will be tide dependent
  • Vessels up to 13.0 metres plus need high tide for entry

Facilities:

  • Water (On berth)
  • Stores: FLT, craneage, available
  • Fuel: All types of fuel available deliveries available to all berths
  • Garbage: 1 x 12m3 Skip included in standard call charges, and sewage collection
  • Repairs - from light engineering up to dry-docking for 250 metres plus vessels
