The Port of Tyne recognises that it plays an important part in the economic, environmental and social life of the surrounding communities. The Port is committed to developing sustainable operations and minimising any adverse impacts it may have on the environment.

As such the Port has a dedicated Environment, Health and Safety department which ensures the Port's continued compliance with environmental legislation and requirements through the implementation of its Environmental Management System (EMS). The Port's EMS was only the third in Europe to achieve the PERS (Port Environmental Review System) Certification, which is an accreditation scheme developed by the European Sea Ports Organisation and EcoPorts.

Port Waste Management

The Merchant Shipping (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulations 2003 requires the Port to provide waste reception facilities to any vessel visiting a Port of Tyne operated berth. To comply with this the Port has wheelie bins specifically designated for use by ships.

The Port also has in place an internal recycling scheme for paper, glass and metal cans that can be used by Port employees and also tenants of the Port. Further to this initiative the Port also recycles its scrap metal and timber. Where the Port is unable to recycle waste it tries to reduce the amount it produces and ensures that it is disposed of in the correct manner.
