The Port of Tyne considers Health & Safety to be of equal importance to all other functions of the business and operates a Safety Management system certified to OHSAS 18001; and the Port's Safety & Environment Department provides competent advice on all matters of health, safety and welfare to assist management, employees and their representatives in their tasks and responsibilities.

As such the Port insists that contractors and/or subcontractors carrying out work on its behalf follow its safe and environmentally compliant guidelines in addition to those required by law or contractual obligation.
