Changes to Lighting
In advance of the works to remove the bridge protection system (scheduled for February 2012 – separate Navigation Notices will be issued) changes to the navigation lighting is proposed.
On or about the 25th January 2012 until approximately 31st January work will commence to remove the existing Amber light in the centre of the walkway (which currently marks the centre of the bridge) & also the fixed red and green lights on the protection piles.
These will be replaced by the following lights, that will mark the centre and either edge of the 30m wide channel through the bridge;
1) Northern (Newcastle) Side a light Flashing Green every 3 seconds exhibited at all times.
2) Southern (Gateshead) Side a light Flashing Red every 3 seconds exhibited at all times.
3) Walkway (Easternmost span) an Occulting White light, marking the centre of the bridge and “best point of passage”. Exhibited at all times.
4) Support Span (Western span) a White Light, long flash every 10 seconds, marking the centre of the bridge and “best point of passage”. Exhibited only when the bridge is raise / open.
During this work, vessel may encounter men working at on the bridge and potentially obstructing the passage. Vessels should therefore Navigate with caution when approaching the area and be prepared to follow the reasonable instructions of the safety craft, which will listen on VHF Ch12, until passage is clear.
Owners, Agents and Charterers should ensure that the contents of the Navigation Notice are made known to Masters and persons in charge of their vessels.
