PORT OF TYNE LAUNCHES TYNE 2050 A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Today the Port’s Chief Executive Officer, Matt Beeton will launch ‘Tyne 2050’, the Port’s new strategic plan.
This is a long-term vision that will aim to see the Tyne become a gateway to help transform both the region and the maritime industry. It is fully aligned to the Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy and to the North East Economic plan.
Matt Beeton, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Tyne 2050 plan is an exciting new vision for the Port. The strategy is critical to sustaining the Port for the long-term and will help lead the way in key areas such as environment and technology as well as collaboration and innovation.
“The Port is the gateway to the North East and is key to helping drive the economic success of our region - a responsibility we take very seriously. In addition, we want to play our part in driving the maritime industry forward for the benefit of the industry as a whole. With 95% of all imports and exports in the UK coming to our shores by sea, it’s essential we modernise and work together on the key areas within our plan.
“This is a clear vision for our business and one we are committed to achieving for the Port, the region and the industry as a whole.”
The Port launched its new vision to stakeholders on Tyneside during a breakfast event at the Baltic and later today (Thursday, 5 December) it will launch this nationally with a reception in London.
Lucy Armstrong, Port of Tyne Chair, said: “This is a plan for purposeful change. It’s a chance to reinvent ourselves and unlock the true potential of the Port of Tyne and River Tyne corridor.
“Tyne 2050 is intentionally ambitious. We will strive to lead the charge and be the best and our strategic aims reflect this ambition.”
Tyne 2050 aims to make the Port Carbon Neutral by 2030, by becoming a test bed for clean energy, an all-electric port.
Tyne 2050 also aims to double diversity by 2030. Through education and by thinking differently, the Port will lead technology and innovation, building on the UK’s first Maritime Innovation Hub, to collaborate with global industry.
Tyne 2050 will see the Port of Tyne setting industry standards, making it fit for the future, recognised for collaboration and being part of the fabric of the North East region, building on the Port’s already successful community programmes.
