The annual Celebration of Achievement took place yesterday at the Port of Tyne with 56 employees receiving recognition of their achievements during the year.

The event recognises academic, training, long-service and retirements as well as notable achievements. This year apprentice Amy Adams was recognised for achieving NVQ Level 2 along with other Port of Tyne apprentices but also received special recognition for being named the South Tyneside College Apprentice of the Year.

Amy, 27, from Gateshead started her business administration apprenticeship in June 2103 as part of the Port's Bulk Cargo team. There were over 200 apprentices who were eligible for the award.

Amy said: "I am really enjoying working at the Port of Tyne and was thrilled to receive the Apprentice of the Year award. The Port is a great place to work with plenty of variety and is a good place to start my career in business administration."

In making the nomination Cheryl Dale-Rowland, trainer at South Tyneside College, said: "Amy is conscientious, hard-working and keen. She is actively seeking to progress and has been enrolled on the level 3 qualification after completing the level 2 framework. She has quickly become a valued member of her team and is relied upon to take on extra responsibilities and actively develops herself."

Geoff Gillon, Port of Tyne Director of Human Resources, said: "Amy has shown great commitment and a willingness to learn in her role here at the Port of Tyne and is making the most of the opportunity to launch her career in business administration. The Celebration of Achievement event is an important way for the Port of Tyne to demonstrate how much it values its employees."

The Port of Tyne itself has received accolades of its own this year being named Port of the Year at the National Transport Awards, receiving gold in the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2014, and chief executive officer was named as the North East Business Executive of the Year.
