An Olympic Great Drops By to Meet Newcastle Schoolchildren23 Sep 2014

Newcastle youngsters welcomed an Olympic gold medallist to their school when US pole vaulter Jenn Suhr dropped by for a visit with the Port of Tyne, before competing in the Great North City Games.

Pupils at Benton Park Primary School welcomed Jenn Suhr to learn about what it takes to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

Jenn Suhr, US Pole Vault Olympic Champion, said: "Winning any gold medal but especially an Olympic Gold is a very emotional and an amazing experience. If, by competing in events such as the City Games and getting out and about to meet young people in the community, I can inspire them to become great at something they love, then that would make it even more special."

The pupils learnt about the sport, posed some well thought-out questions and interviewed Jenn for the school radio station.

Daniel said "It was an honour to meet such an inspiring Olympian star," and Mustapha said, "It was amazing to be yards away from the world's best pole vaulter."

The Port of Tyne is supporting a year-long programme of art projects, events and exhibitions which celebrate and explore sport and art through Great North Run Culture. The first part of the year-long programme starts with the Great North Greats exhibition in South Shields Museum and Art Gallery.

Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of Tyne, said: "We are delighted to be supporting Great North Million and the year-long programme featuring film, photography, dance, drama, writing, which has used the world's largest half-marathon to launch exciting, innovative and accessible art.

"The Port is proud of its commitment to enhancing opportunities for young people and we hope the opportunity to meet a sporting great will inspire the region's young people to build their own skills, confidence and aspiration."

Great North Greats is a touring exhibition celebrating the millionth finish of the Bupa Great North Run and Tyneside's incredible sporting and industrial heritage. Telling the stories of individuals and communities, everyday triumphs and groundbreaking achievements, it is a celebration of all of the Great North Greats - ordinary people, extraordinary achievements.

The exhibition will feature 5 of the regions celebrated ‘greats' include inventor Joseph Swan, industrialists William Armstrong and Rachel Parsons as well as sporting legends Harry Clasper and Tanni Grey-Thompson. For more information:
