At the same time as handling its highest cargo volumes in more than 20 years, the Port of Tyne logistics services has won NYK Group Europe's ‘UK Haulier of the Year 2012'.

NYK is one of the largest shipping companies in the world and the Port of Tyne handles and transports containers of auto parts, retail goods, and clothing for customers including Nissan, Pentland and the Co-op.

An acknowledged industry award ‘Haulier of the Year' goes to the distributor with zero failures which means the Port achieved an incredible 100% deliveries on time.

Ian Gibson, Port of Tyne Director of Logistics, said: "This is a tremendous achievement in recognition of our excellent customer service.

"This has only been possible through stringent procedures and efficient planning and allocation of deliveries, and is entirely thanks to our superb team. It's been an exceptional year and winning Haulier of the Year is a great achievement for everyone."

Following this success the Port of Tyne is en route to the UK's biggest logistics exhibition - Multimodal 2013 at the NEC in Birmingham.

Now entering its sixth year, the event has evolved into an annual one-stop-shop for shippers who need to find ways of optimising their supply chain and transportation flow with over 5,000 people attending.

Ian added: "Many of the UK's leading manufacturers and retailers are already using the Port of Tyne including companies like Argos, JML, Tetley and Nissan.

"Multimodal is a good platform to meet potential new customers and market the benefits of the Port in helping them manage their supply chain needs."

New customers to the Port in 2012 include Komatsu, GM Packaging and tea importers Ringtons, attracted by the Port of Tyne's distribution service which stretches over the entire UK and shipping connections to five continents.

In recent years the Port has worked hard to create a unique package of services and facilities, tailored to customer's individual needs. And despite tough trading conditions, the Port is predicting further growth in its container volumes this year.

Ian Gibson adds: "We are continuing to invest, with a new £6 million container crane due to be delivered mid-2013, which will work alongside our existing gantry crane, and help future-proof the Port's container business.

"In addition, we have invested a further £1.5 million in a new container terminal IT system and terminal equipment, so there is plenty of investment committed and development underway."

These new developments will help the Port expand its services even further and one emerging growth area is the Baltic region, owing to the Port's excellent short-sea feeder shipping services linking the Tyne to strategic destinations throughout Europe and the Baltic.

Combined with deepwater berths, the latest handling equipment, a high-security container compound, customs-approved warehousing, and a distribution fleet of more than 180 trucks and trailers, the Port of Tyne is really moving in the right direction.
