BOWLED OVER AT THE PORT OF TYNE 02 Oct 2013

As part of its support of Durham County Cricket's Foundation the Port of Tyne invited 30 local schoolchildren to visit the Port and learn more about its partnership with the foundation.

As well as sponsoring the club's shirts for the Yorkshire Bank 40, the Port of Tyne is supporting Durham County Cricket Club's (DCCC) successful outreach education programme through its Foundation.

The key stage 2 pupils from St. Oswald's, Mortimer Primary, Hadrian Road and St. Peters and St. Pauls Primary schools - each had a half day session where they used technology to design and programme robots to mimic cricket actions and were set the challenges to make their robots run between the stumps, bat and bowl.

Richard Hopper, Marketing Manager at DCCC, said: "The project we've devised in partnership with the Port of Tyne uses computers and Lego to build devices inspired by the Port.

"Using the same technology we link the project back to cricket by designing robotic cricketers and bowlers and by using these techniques we are able to help impact on core curriculum skills."

The partnership between the Port of Tyne and DCCC's Foundation aims to give young people a unique educational experience.

Port of Tyne has been a partner of Durham County Cricket Foundation for a number of years and has supported the Foundations education activity, particularly working with schools in the South Tyneside area.

Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of Tyne, said: "We are proud to be working with DCCC's Foundation to inspire young people and provide a programme designed to improve their confidence and aspirations for the future."

Using the power of sport Durham County Cricket Foundation aims to provide inspiration, motivation, raised self-esteem, and has already had an immeasurable impact of thousands of people in the North East. The Foundation will continue to work with the Port of Tyne giving young people in the region an exciting learning experience.
