One of the region's most popular summer events takes place in North Tyneside next weekend.

The Mouth of the Tyne Festival runs from July 11 to July 14 and features outdoor evening concerts at Tynemouth Priory from The Human League and James Morrison; an afternoon concert at the Priory with a line-up including Aswad and The Wonder Stuff; an exclusive show at Playhouse Whitley Bay from The Futureheads; and a weekend of music and dance in Tynemouth Station.

The programme at Tynemouth Station sees community groups sharing the limelight alongside professional artists from across the UK. Under the title 'Platform', the entertainment will include Candoco - the world's leading company of disabled and non-disabled dancers, US break dancer Jaron Joiner and, in a tie-in with Latin American festival Vamos, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban and Mexican Mariachi music. A special area for the under fives also makes a return this year.

Norma Redfearn, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, said: "We are all looking forward to the festival this weekend and it promises to be another busy one with lots to see and do, especially with the music concerts in the Priory and the activities in Tynemouth Station."

"I know the team are really appreciative of all the support they receive from our sponsors and of course from the many thousands of visitors and residents who enjoy the event."

The festival is supported this year by TyneMet College, Kier North Tyneside and Port of Tyne. The finalist videos from the Port of Tyne Reflect Film Awards will be shown on the big screens at the Priory concerts throughout the weekend.

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said: "Sponsoring the Mouth of the Tyne Festival, one of the region's biggest events, is just one of the ways that the Port of Tyne helps businesses and communities in our area.

"The Festival has a national profile and attracts visitors from far afield who spend in local shops, cafes and bars and stay in hotels, all of which provide a welcome boost for the local economy. "
