Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is pushing the boat out in 2016 and is going big with Plan a Cruise Month, launching on 1st October 2016.

This worldwide marketing campaign will help put cruise travel in the spotlight, showcasing the thousands of worldwide destinations and variety of experiences that can be discovered whilst on a cruise.

The month long campaign, running from 1 - 31 October, is aimed at travel agents, cruise lines, industry partners and consumers. Despite speaking to multiple audiences all activity will have one common objective; to create awareness of cruise holidays. In advance of the kick off on 1st October, the CLIA team is to embark on a nationwide tour of the UK, in what CLIA has coined the Cruise Relay.

Taking place from 23 - 30 September, Andy Harmer, CLIA Europe VP Operations and Adele Foster, Events and Training Manager will travel the length and breadth of the UK, from Kirkwall right down to Portsmouth, visiting ten locations over the course of the eight day tour.

The Cruise Relay will be reaching the Port of Tyne's International Passenger Terminal on Wednesday 28 September and hoping to spread the word about cruise holidays to travel agents in North East England.

In 2016 the Port of Tyne celebrated a record number of cruise calls with 43 cruise ship visits and the opportunity to reach more destinations direct from your local port. Next year the Port of Tyne expects a new record of 60 cruise calls.

As the closest UK Port to the Baltics, a cruise from the Port of Tyne provides easy access to the Fjords and Russia and the warmer climes of the Canary Islands, The Azores, Portugal, Morocco and Spain.

Andy Harmer, CLIA Europe VP Operations, said: "We are incredibly excited to get on the road for the Cruise Relay, to mark the start of CLIA's Plan a Cruise Month activity. It's crucial that we meet with our cruise partners up and down the country to make sure they're up to speed on the latest developments and more importantly, to show our appreciation for their ongoing support.

"Cruise holidays are growing in popularity year on year, and cruises that depart from the UK are on the rise too, now accounting for 47% of the market (840,000 passengers in 2015). We hope that the Cruise Relay will showcase the importance that our regional cruise ports play in the growth of the cruise industry and in their contribution to UK and Irish tourism."

On social media, CLIA wants the travel and tourism sector to be part of the Plan a Cruise Month conversation. The association is asking you to tweet your favourite cruise place on Monday 3rd October between 2pm - 4pm using the hashtag #CruiseMonth. This could be a specific town or city, island, region or attraction.

The Cruise Relay hit the road at Dover on 23 September, visited Kirkwall and Ullapool 26 September, will be calling at the Port of Tyne 28 September and then travels to Southampton and Bristol 29 September and ends at Liverpool and Portsmouth on 30 September.
