Cruising in to Port of Tyne 11 May 2011

The first of the season's cruise ships arrives at the Port of Tyne's International Passenger Terminal this week, bringing 400 visitors to a warm North East welcome.

The sleek, 160m long "Athena" is due early on Thursday and will stay for the day, allowing passenger's time to sample the highlights of the region.

The Port of Tyne has made substantial investments in enhancing facilities at the International Passenger Terminal to attract major cruise lines to the region. Companies such as Fred Olsen, Saga, P&O and Holland and America, are now regularly calling at the Port, with 20 cruise vessels due to visit the Port this year and already 37 provisionally booked for 2012.

The arrival of cruise vessels has a substantial impact on the North East economy. In 2010 cruise and ferry passengers contributed in excess of £44 million in tourist spend.

Steven Harrison, Chief Operating Officer for Port of Tyne, said: "Since 2004, we have been successfully promoting cruises to Northern Europe and the Baltic from the River Tyne and we are delighted to see the growth in this business. We have weathered the impact of the recession of 2009 and we are now looking forward to the potential of a record year in 2012.

"We have invested substantially to improve the facilities and make the terminal attractive for the international cruise operators and it is fantastic news that many of them are coming back for the second and third years. And in 2012 operators are looking to try out new destinations such as the Mediterranean in addition to the well established Scandinavian and Baltic routes."

The Port of Tyne is one of only ten ports in the UK able to accommodate large cruise vessels and one of only five ports offering berths of up to 325 metres in length.

The Athena is expected to arrive at the Port of Tyne's Northumbrian Quay early on Thursday morning sailing at 5pm.
