Iconic landmark supports Red Nose Day15 Mar 2011

The historic Swing Bridge in Newcastle will be seen as never before to help the staff of Port of Tyne support Comic Relief's Red Nose Day.

The world-famous Tyneside landmark will sport a giant red nose to herald the national fund-raising day on Friday 18th March.

The 6m diameter inflatable nose will be attached to the Swing Bridge on Wednesday to promote the fund raising efforts around the country to raise millions of pounds to transform lives in Africa and the UK.

Port of Tyne maintains the 135-year-old engineering masterpiece that was designed and constructed by Sir W G Armstrong to have a unique swinging action to allow river traffic through to the upper reaches of the Tyne.

Port of Tyne also has a fleet of 65 trucks that criss-cross the UK from the South Shields base - all of which will be boasting red noses this week.

Meanwhile the Port's 450 employees have been up to all sorts of antics to raise cash and support, including cake baking, nail painting, dressing up and dressing down days, raffles and competitions and selling noses to their many customers and businesses on the Port site - even the management team has been seen wearing red noses at their executive meetings.
