INSPIRING YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS AND FILMMAKERS OF THE FUTURE04 Jun 2014

Entries are flying into the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards as schools across the region take part in inspiration workshops.

Now the biggest photography and film competition of its kind in the North East of England, the Reflect Awards has been encouraging young people aged 16 and under to enter with the help of professional filmmakers and photographers.

Students at Benton Park Primary and Heaton Manor schools in Newcastle took part in the workshops organised by the Port of Tyne, hosted by professional photographers and filmmakers giving advice on composing photos and directing and editing short films.

Christine Bell, Head of Media Studies at Heaton Manor School in Newcastle, said: "The Reflect Awards offer something tangible for our students already studying GCSE Media Studies to get their teeth into.

"We were already aware of the competition and it's been great to have professionals come to the school - it really adds kudos to the event and it's an amazing opportunity for the students to complete a film in a single day."

The group of 14 and 15-year-olds in Year 10 at Heaton Manor were able to use their new-found skills to create and make their own films about what the North East means to them.

Six more media workshops will be held at schools in South Shields, North Shields, Gateshead and Northumberland to help inspire creativity and offer some useful skills for the future.

Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of Tyne, said: "The workshops are a great opportunity for young people to develop their photography and film making skills and to get inspiration to take part in the competition, which is all about showing off what the North East means to them.

"The Port has organised the Reflect Awards for several years and it keeps growing, with more people getting their cameras and even their phones out to have a go."

The Reflect Awards photo categories include North East Life, North East Nature, North East People, as well as a film category and a special youth category for photographers aged 16 and under. The film makers are invited to submit a one-minute film that simply captures the North East region as they see it.

With top judges and great cash prizes plus exhibition space in galleries across region the Reflect Awards is open for entries until 19 September.
