Jet Skier prosecuted for dangerous navigation 23 Jun 2011

A jet skier who is lucky to be alive after crashing into a harbour wall on the Tyne has been fined by magistrates in South Shields.

Jonathan Carr (25) of South Tyneside was prosecuted under Port of Tyne byelaws for navigating his jet-ski in a dangerous manner at excessive speeds on the wrong side of the river.

He was fined £70 plus £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Carr was not wearing a helmet or a lifejacket when he was spotted minutes before crashing into a wall sustaining severe injuries. He had had no training.

The prosecution is the first following the joint Operation Marlin launched by the Port of Tyne and Northumbria Police in April to crack down on dangerous and anti-social behaviour on the river.

Port of Tyne Harbour Master Mike Nicholson said: "Mr Carr sustained very serious injuries and is lucky to be alive. Anyone who wants to use the river for leisure purposes should ensure they know and understand the rules - including undertaking training for their own safety and that of other river users."

Acting Inspector Steve Howe of Northumbria Police added: "Operation Marlin is a concentrated effort to ensure the river is safe for all users. We are warning river users that they could find themselves in court if they breach byelaws by exceeding speed limits, obstructing navigation or using their vessel in a dangerous manner."
