Luxury Cruise Comes To Tyneside 18 May 2012

One of the most luxurious cruise vessels in the world will sail into the UK's Best Port of Call on Monday 21 May.

The Seabourn Sojourn tips the scales towards the ultra-luxury cruise segment with the highest ratio of space per guest in the cruise industry, including the largest spa on any luxury ship and generous private verandas on 90 percent of her suites.

The Sojourn will be bringing over 450 passengers, mostly Americans, to the North East.

They'll be visiting attractions that include The Sage Gateshead, The BALTIC, Newcastle City Centre, Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle & Garden.

It will be a welcome trip close to home for Captain Hamish Elliott 43, who lives at Seaburn in Sunderland and Cruise Director Susan Wood, from Fatfield, Washington.

"It is great to be able to bring a cruise call a little closer to home", said Captain Elliott.

"This is the first time Seabourn has visited the Port of Tyne and I hope that passengers and crew enjoy their time in Port".

The 12 day cruise began a week ago in Portugal and has included in its itinerary Oporto, La Coruna, Cork, Dublin, Invergordon, Leith, Newcastle, Holland and Hamburg.

Steven Harrison, Chief Operating Officer, Port of Tyne said: "Our cruise and ferry business contributed £45 million to the North East's tourism economy last year.

"And we are delighted that Seabourn Sojourn is including the Port in an itinerary for the first time. Passengers can expect a warm welcome with plenty to see and do at tourist attractions across the region."

And after a day in Port passengers can relax in one of the most unusual features of Seabourn Sojourn, an ingenious ‘living room' that replaces the traditional cruise ship lobby with a welcoming lounge filled with easy chairs, sofas and cocktail tables.
