Matt Baker to Judge Port of Tyne Photo Competition 28 Jul 2010

Photos are flying in fast and furious for this year's Port of Tyne Reflect awards. Already over 350 people have entered over 1,200 photos and there's still four weeks until the competition closes!

This year Reflect has a celebrity judging ReflectYouth. Former Blue Peter Presenter, star of Country File and the One Show, Matt Baker, will be selecting the finalists in the under-16's category.

Originally from County Durham Matt says "I am delighted that the Port of Tyne asked me to judge ReflectYouth, the North East has so many dramatic landscapes to capture on camera. Yet with so many fantastic images already entered in the competition it's going to be difficult for me to pick a winner, nevertheless I wish everyone the best of luck and fun taking photos".

Since Reflect was launched in 2007 the competition has gone from strength to strength and become one the biggest photography contests in the region. The Port of Tyne invites anyone to enter; the only limitation is that your photos must be taken in the North East, from the borders of Berwick to the North York Moors.

Andrew Moffat Chief Executive Officer at the Port of Tyne adds "Reflect is an important part of how we engage with our stakeholders and that includes of course our local community and indeed anyone who has a connection with the River Tyne. It's terrific news that Matt Baker is judging ReflectYouth but I don't envy any of our judges, it will be very hard to select the winners from the number of entries already received".

ReflectFilm, in association with Northern Film and Media, has also attracted a wide range of pitches to create a short film. "We are fantastically excited to be working with Port of Tyne on this prestigious project," commented NFM Creative Industry Director Agnes Wilkie. "We see it as a brilliant opportunity to reach out to people who might not think of themselves as ‘film makers' but who have the imagination to visualize a short film which tells a new and compelling story about the Tyne and help them realise that vision".

Prizes in each category include £500 and exhibition space at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art; the closing date for entry is midnight 1st September and for any further information please visit
