NEW DIRECTOR AT PORT OF TYNE10 Nov 2010

Port of Tyne has appointed Susan Wear to the newly created post of Corporate Affairs Director.

The job is to broaden the award-winning Port's presence in the region and nationally, to help develop its role as a generator of economic growth for North East England and to build upon the work supporting the development of the many local communities served by the Port.

Formerly a journalist, Wear's first role in public relations was managing the publicity for the National Garden Festival at Gateshead. She has since worked in the private sector, local government, health, and in tourism. She also helped establish the Newcastle Gateshead destination marketing agency, NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which led the 2008 European Capital of Culture bid.

She has also campaigned nationally and internationally to promote the region's World Heritage sites of Durham Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall, and some of the region's major regeneration projects, including Gateshead's Millennium Bridge, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Newcastle's Quayside developments. She also introduced a new brand for the City of Sunderland while working for Sunderland City Council.

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer, Port of Tyne, said the new role will play a pivotal part in his vision for a vibrant and sustainable Port of Tyne, which aims to consolidate existing business and expand into new markets.

"Susan brings a breadth of experience which will help us build upon the work we've done so far to make sure the Port of Tyne is not only a commercially successful hub for the region and Northern Europe, but also a key player in the economic growth of North East England."

Wear said: "I have always been privileged to be part of teams that have great vision and the determination and passion to see them through. Everything I've done so far has helped promote economic growth for this region, so the challenge to be part of the future of the Port, with all it has to offer the region's future growth, was irresistible."
