The Port of Tyne has appointed David Appleton as a Non-Executive Director.

Bringing a wealth of experience to the Port, David has held a variety of senior positions with some of the world's largest shipping lines including United States Lines, Sea-Land and APL. During this time he has lived and worked in the UK, Europe, Russia, North America and Asia.

He was most recently Senior Vice President responsible for liner trade management worldwide with global container shipping company APL, located in the Singapore Headquarters. Previously, he had served as President - Europe Region for parent company Neptune Orient Lines.

David spent his early career in the Merchant Navy and gained his First Mate's qualification at South Shields Marine College and a degree in Maritime Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics.

He said: "I am delighted to be joining the Port of Tyne at such an exciting time, when there is great potential for further growth building on its global reputation for excellence.
"I look forward to being part of the Board, and bringing my experience in the marine and shipping sector to help shape the Port's business strategy."

Since returning from Singapore at the end of last year, David has established his own consultancy, Focus Maritime Limited, which carries out advisory and consulting work in the maritime industry.

Sir Les Elton, Chairman of the Port of Tyne, said: "David brings a wealth of knowledge in global shipping, commercial business acumen and worldwide trading, providing terrific experience and I know he will be an excellent addition to the Board. I look forward to welcoming him to the Port."

Originally from Liverpool, David and his family now live in South Buckinghamshire.
