New work boat comes sailing in to the Port of Tyne23 Dec 2011

The Port of Tyne has invested £1.1million in a new addition to its fleet - a 16 metre work boat to be named in honour of the late Sir Bobby Robson.

Just arrived, the vessel is fitted with a 6 metre wide plough and 17 tonne crane. It will be used for a variety of work duties on the Tyne that help keep the river channel and Port berths navigable and safe for shipping. They include river bed levelling, placing and retrieving buoys, and providing diving support as well as general maintenance, pushing and towing duties.

Mike Nicholson, Harbour Master, Port of Tyne, says: "We are improving our facilities to meet the commercial demands of a busy and growing port and this is another major investment that adds to our overall capacity to support the many businesses and other users on and around the River Tyne. This is a very valuable addition to our fleet."

In 2011 a major dredging programme and investment in excess of £5million resulted in the River Tyne being deeper than ever with 13 metres of water now allowing even larger ships to be accommodated at the Port of Tyne. The plough work boat will help to maintain the appropriate depths in the river channel and at the Port's busy Riverside Quay.

The new work boat was built for the Port of Tyne by Mustang Marine, a specialist work boat builder based at Pembroke Dock, South Wales and will undergo rigorous trials before being fully commissioned in the New Year.
