PLOUGHING IN TO HELP 18 Jul 2013

Farmer, Peter Alderslade is flying the flag for England at the World Ploughing Championships taking place from 19 - 20 July in Alberta, Canada. Peter 56, who farms with his brother Geoff at Mundles Farm in East Boldon, is being supported by the Port of Tyne who are transporting his tractor and plough 10,000 nautical miles to Canada.

Tynegrain, one of the Port of Tyne's 100 commercial tenants approached the Port on Peter's behalf to see if they could transport the equipment to Canada. Gary Bright, Managing Director of Tynegrain, said: "Thanks to their expertise and world-wide shipping connections, the Port of Tyne has been able to respond readily and easily to this unique request."

Susan Wear, Port of Tyne's Director of Corporate Affairs, said: "This is one of the most unusual requests that the Port has ever received and we have been happy to support Peter to compete at this prestigious and unique event. We wish him the very best of luck."

After winning at the British Championships in October, Peter is the reigning British Champion and will join 60 competitors from 30 countries vying to win the coveted title of ‘World Ploughing Champion'.

"I'm really proud to be representing England and indebted to the Port of Tyne and Tynegrain for all of the support they are providing.

"I have been placed third and fourth in the past but this time I will be able to use my own plough which has taken 48 days to reach Canada. I hope this will provide me with the competitive edge to win this time round. It's a particularly prestigious year for the competition which is celebrating its 60th anniversary," said Peter.
