Port of Tyne awarded Best UK Port of Call 16 Nov 2011

The world's leading cruise experts have chosen the Port of Tyne as the UKs Best Port of Call.

Following mystery visits across the summer around the 20 cruise visits to the Tyne the editors of the industry's leading cruise advice website have awarded the accolade to the Port.

The Port was named the ‘Best UK Port of Call' in the prestigious awards, which honour top cruise lines, ships and ports.

Explaining why the Port of Tyne was selected as the best UK port for visitors, Cruise Critic's Editor in Chief, Carolyn Spencer Brown said: "Newcastle stands right up against some of the UK's marquee ports when it comes to an absolutely delightful city centre - including but not limited to the Quayside - and superb museums, restaurants and galleries. It's convenient as both a port of embarkation and a port of call, lines like Fred. Olsen and Cruise & Maritime Voyages start and end cruises here while Holland America offers day visits, and Newcastle's charms extend beyond the city to the countryside, with a range of attractions from castles to cathedrals and the gorgeous scenery of the Pennines."

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne's Chief Executive Officer said: "It is terrific news to receive this accolade. Our staff and partners involved in the cruise business for the area are delighted to be recognised, especially from the industries own critics".

This rewards our commitment to provide excellent customer service which extends to greeting passengers with a famously warm welcome in partnership with NewcastleGateshead Initiative and North Tyneside Tourist Information and all of the fantastic tourist venues and attractions across the region."

The Ports cruise business provides a positive economic impact in excess of £44m to the region and sustains about 1,400 jobs in the tourism sector.

A record 37 cruise calls are expected in 2012 and the success of the Port of Tyne's cruise business looks set to continue as the British cruise market experiences a resurgence with one in nine package holidays now a cruise and a record 1.62 million Brits taken a cruises every year, a figure which has more than doubled over the past 10 years.

Sarah Stewart, Chief Executive of destination management and marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: "I'm delighted, but certainly not surprised, that the Port of Tyne has been named Best UK Port of Call. We work closely with the Port of Tyne to ensure that visitors enjoy the best possible welcome experience, providing cruise passengers with access to tourist information advisors and information about the destination on arrival.

"As a compact destination, cruise passengers are able to experience a huge amount even on a day trip. The history, culture, sport and shopping on offer have helped establish NewcastleGateshead as one of the UK's most exciting destinations and as an Olympic Host City next year, Newcastle will play its part in the biggest sporting event in the world. With more calls planned for next year, we're looking forward to working with the Port of Tyne to grow this valuable and flourishing part of NewcastleGateshead's tourism economy."

The Cruise Critic Editors' Picks Awards celebrate excellence in cruise travel and are selected by a panel of cruise journalists. This year, there are 25 different categories embracing a wide variety of cruises, ships and onboard features and attractions available to UK travellers.
