Port of Tyne busiest since the Millennium 25 May 2011

Keen ship spotters may have noticed that Port of Tyne has been exceptionally busy of late; only a week ago there was a ship on every berth and in some cases two or more.

Total shipping movements in 2010 increased by 3% to 4,308 reflecting the buoyant recovery in trade volumes. However from April to May 2011 some 720 vessel movements were recorded on the Tyne, that's one per hour over the month period and a staggering 100% increase on normal traffic levels.

Harbour Master Michael Nicholson said: "This is the busiest I have ever seen the river in the 8 years I have been at the Port of Tyne and after careful checking of the records as far back as January 2000, busier than any month since before the Millennium".

The surge in river traffic is the result of a combination of increased trade and a major capital dredging programme has meant that river traffic levels have soared since April.

Traffic through the Port of Tyne across its bulk and conventional business has seen an increase in scrap, steel, grain and biomass; in addition car volumes have increased by 48% and containers by 54%.

The positive outlook for river traffic looks set to continue for the remainder of the year as shipping is forecast to see further upward trends in energy products, including coal and biomass, and in containerised goods.
