Port of Tyne employees flying a new flag 26 Jan 2012

Employees of the Port of Tyne are celebrating after successfully achieving the international standard of Investors in People.

The Port set out to achieve the award to help drive business growth through its people, and two years on is reaping the rewards.

Geoff Gillon, Director of Human Resources, said: "To achieve the Investors in People Standard the Port had to demonstrate continual improvement in programmes designed to deliver growth in the business. It has provided a framework for us to work towards and the process has had a very positive impact on the business."

The Investors in People process has helped the Port make significant improvements to internal communications, training and development programmes, and supported a return to business growth in 2010, followed by further improvement in 2011.

Along the way, a new Personal Development Review process has been implemented for every member of the 450 strong workforce, organisational structures have been developed to improve performance and last year a profit share scheme was introduced to enable all employees to share in the success of the business.

"By embracing the principles of Investors in People, we have been able to make significant improvements to help grow the business and develop the skills and commitment of the workforce." added Geoff.

"The process has been supported by everyone - our ten internal advisors have personally put in a lot of effort and time above and beyond their normal role and 52 employees were selected for interview by the assessor, all of them making a major contribution. We are delighted with this award - it reflects a great team effort."

Investors in People is an internationally recognised standard used by organisations of all sizes and sectors. Achieving the Standard represents a true commitment to employees and demonstrates a solid foundation of good practice which remains challenging and aspirational for many organisations.

Darren Lawlor, Business Support Advisor at idg, the official Investors in People partner for North East England, says: "The Port of Tyne is a great example of how Investors in People can help organisations meet business goals by developing strategies to improve organisational performance. I would like to congratulate the Port and its people on their commitment to continuous improvement in what they do. By offering a flexible, practical and easy to use improvement framework, Investors in People is designed to help organisations and their people enhance performance and meet goals - with their recognition success, Port of Tyne is certainly working to do this."

The Port will now be able to fly the Investors in People flag and will be aiming to progress to the next level of the Standard.
