PORT OF TYNE goes with the FLOW28 Feb 2012

The Port of Tyne has welcomed some weird and wonderful art installations along its shores from semi submerged cars to bamboo bridges and now "~Flow".

~Flow is part of Artists taking the lead, one of twelve extraordinary public art commissions funded by the UK Arts Councils for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad to help celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Based on a waterwheel it will harness the power of the River Tyne to power a number of electro-acoustic musical instruments.

The Port of Tyne is supporting this event for the six months that ~Flow will be on the river. Mike Nicholson, Port of Tyne, Harbour Master says: "Over the years I've been approached about numerous creative projects but this is the first time that a barge has been designed as a musical instrument.

"Flow is a great project and will help bring the Quayside alive, attracting more people to the river and the surrounding businesses, cafes and pubs there".

The project team first decided on a water theme because of the symbiotic relationship of the River Tyne with the region. Ed Carter, ~Flow's producer, says: "The Port of Tyne has been incredibly supportive of the project, which couldn't have happened without this support. Mike offered plenty of advice that has helped enormously".

~Flow will spend the next few weeks being fully commissioned and will be open to the public with free admission at the quayside pontoon in Newcastle from Saturday 25 March.
