PORT OF TYNE SHIPS CONTAINER ACROSS THE RIVER AS PART OF THE BBC1 GREAT NORTH PASSION04 Apr 2014

The Port of Tyne is helping to transport a shipping container one mile across the river from North Shields Fish Quay to the Port's main operational facility at Riverside Quay in South Shields.

On Monday 7 April the 7m long container will be transported across the river Tyne as part of the ‘Great North Passion' event to be broadcast live on BBC1 on Good Friday.

Mike Nicholson, Port of Tyne's Harbour Master, said: "We will be using the Port's plough dredger the ‘Sir Bobby Robson' to ship the container from North to South Shields".

"It's the first time we have ever shipped a container on such a small scale and it's taken careful planning to make it happen".

Once the container arrives at Riverside Quay, the Port's container gantry crane will lift it off the ‘Sir Bobby' on to a waiting HGV where it will finish its journey towards Bents Park.

The container has been decorated by the North Shields Fish Quay Community with the help of artist Richard Broderick.

Steve Bishop, Senior Manager Cultural Services at North Tyneside Council, said: "It has been very exciting to be part of this special event and we wanted to make it even more unique by transporting the container from North to South Tyneside across the river.

"The Port of Tyne has approached this unusual request with an incredible amount of support, thanks to the crew on-board the Sir Bobby Robson and the Port's logistics team who have helped to make this possible."

Once back on dry land the container will join eleven others like it that have been created in locations across Northumberland, Middlesbrough, Tyneside and Wearside. Each has a dedicated artist who, with their community's help, has been busy transforming it to symbolise the Stations of the Cross.

The 12 symbolic shipping containers will then join 60 others to form a crucifix in Bents Park in South Shields on Good Friday, for a televised event with music, performances and a documentary.

The Great North Passion is being produced in partnership with the Cultural Spring, a £2m Arts Council project to get more people involved in the arts across Tyne and Wear.

The Great North Passion will be broadcast on Good Friday, 18 April on BBC1.
