Port of Tyne sponsor Songs from the Shipyards24 Feb 2011

Port of Tyne, one of the UK's largest Trust Ports, is delighted to be sponsoring the Tyneside Cinema.

Port of Tyne will be supporting The Unthanks: Songs from the Shipyards Live, a one-off audiovisual event celebrating the shipbuilding heritage of North East England.

Put together as part of This Working Life: Tales From The Shipyard, Tyneside Cinema's part in a major project by the British Film Institute to celebrate our industrial heritage, this film and folk collaboration between acclaimed filmmaker Richard Fenwick, and Mercury Prize nominated musicians, The Unthanks sees Fenwick rework some of the region's archive shipbuilding footage from 1900 to the modern day, to create a new 50 minute film, which will be accompanied by music from The Unthanks, who will be using shipyard and regional songs as their starting point.

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer said:
"We are pleased to sponsor this unique event as part of our commitment to supporting communities, arts and business in the North East. This is a very special opportunity to celebrate the region's shipbuilding heritage with internationally known musicians and a nationally acclaimed filmmaker, and Port of Tyne is pleased to be able to share the experience with people who like us recognise the role of the River Tyne in our heritage and shaping our future."

Mark Dobson, Tyneside Cinema Chief Executive said:
"We are extremely grateful to Port of Tyne for their imaginative and bold sponsorship of this exciting - and entirely sold out event. Sponsorship of arts and culture is vital in this day as we hear stories of cuts of funding across the country. Port of Tyne is a fabulous example of a business that really cares about its place and its community demonstrated through the creation of this unique work that will celebrate the shipbuilding heritage of the Tyne and the other great rivers of the north."

The Unthanks: Songs from the Shipyards Live takes places on Sunday 27 February ay 8.00pm. This event is now sold out, to add your name to the waiting list for tickets ring the Tyneside Cinema Box Office on 0845 217 9909.
