Thirty strong swimmers are about to take on the challenge of a lifetime swimming 16 kilometres of the River Tyne.

The Tyne River Swim is back for the third year and set to take place at the same time as tens of thousands compete in the Great North Run on September 15.

The Port of Tyne is once again supporting the swim, which will see the thirty experienced swimmers enter the water at Newcastle Quayside Marina, swim under the Millennium Bridge and battle the Tyne all the way to the river's mouth at Littlehaven Beach in South Shields.

Port of Tyne's Harbour Master, Mike Nicholson, said: "The Tyne River Swim is becoming something of an iconic event, but it's not for the faint-hearted. Everyone entering is an experienced open water swimmer and we've had to work closely with the organisers to ensure the race was carefully planned as it enters one of the UK's busiest commercial shipping channels.

"The River Tyne is one of the cleanest in the UK and the Port of Tyne encourages safe river recreational use - I wish everyone taking part the very best of luck."

The Port's pilot boat Collingwood will be leading the swimmers, acting as a floating control centre and leading two other safety boats and 12 kayaks.

Tony Greener, 55, from North Shields, is the swim's director and he's also looking forward to taking part again.

"The Tyne River Swim is unique and we've got open swimmers from all over the country to enter this year. Training is essential, as it's the aquatic equivalent of a marathon. The weather on the day will also be critical, but we do have the help of the river current.

"We are very grateful for the support we've been given - without the Port of Tyne this simply couldn't happen. South Shields Sailing Club too have been great champions and everyone taking part is really up for the challenge."

The swim is due to start at 13.30 and expected to take three hours to reach Littlehaven beach. Everyone taking part is fundraising for the RNLI and donations and support will be welcome. For further information please visit:
