The Port of Tyne in association with Northern Film & Media has gone in to the movie business, with ReflectFilm the latest addition to the Port of Tyne's Reflect Photo and Film competition.

Since its launch in 2007 the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards has grown to become one the biggest photography contests in the North East. This year the Port of Tyne extended the awards to include a film category working in association with Northern Film & Media.

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer Port of Tyne adds "The Port of Tyne Reflect Awards is designed to capture the essence and creative talents of the people in the North East, and this new category allows entrants to access another media to express their creativity".

Meerkat Films based in Newcastle have been commissioned to produce three shortlisted films, which will be premiered at the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards evening. Magnus Dennison, Producer at Meerkat Films says "We were really impressed with the standard of the pitches; three really exciting projects. It was a pleasure making the films - all the directors put a lot of effort into getting just what they wanted. I'm not sure it was planned, but the films fall into a very interesting set, one being shot entirely from the air, one from the ground, and one under-ground! It's going to be tricky to choose the best one".

Tom Harvey Chief Executive of Northern Film & Media who is the judge of the ReflectFilm category said "Film provides the ideal medium to capture the iconic waterscapes of the Port of Tyne and is an opportunity for the North East's filmmakers to develop their creative talents. The diversity of the river is mirrored in three short listed films of exceptional quality".

Alex Kinsey, 30 years old from Gosforth currently working as an actor, whose film has been shortlisted to win Reflect Film, says "Making my film for Reflect was a great experience and Meerkat Films made the complicated shoot go very smoothly. I'm very pleased with the result and am very grateful for the input of everyone who got involved with the production".

The winner of ReflectFilm together with the other Reflect photo winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 16th September. For further information please visit
