PORT SPONSORS ' THE FASTEST WHEELCHAIR RACE ON THE PLANET'06 Sep 2012
The Port of Tyne is sponsoring the 12th annual Tyne Tunnel 2K International wheelchair race - deemed the fastest wheelchair race on earth, and will be in the company of the world's elite paralympic athletes as they race under the depths of the river Tyne.
The Tyne Tunnel 2K International is a unique wheelchair race taking place on Friday September 14 at Tyne Tunnel 1. It combines a mixture of speed, technical ability, physical fitness and stamina, providing a challenge that these world-class athletes find irresistible.
Susan Wear, Port of Tyne Director of Corporate Affairs, said: "The Port of Tyne is delighted to be supporting the 12th annual Tyne Tunnel wheelchair race and welcoming athletes who come from all over the world. This year there's extra excitement because many of them will be competing for gold in the Paralympics in the next couple of weeks and be at their competitive peak. And of course some of them will be going for top places in the Great North Run as well."
With the Paralympic Games starting on August 29, there is a huge buzz around Paralympians competing in the North East road race, and then taking part in the Great North Run on September 16.
David Burdus, Race Director for the Tyne Tunnel 2K, said: "It is an event which I hold very close to my heart so it is great news that the Port of Tyne is giving its support to help make this event happen."
Paralympians competing in the Tyne Tunnel 2K race include: Josh Cassidy (Canada), Josh George (USA), Richard Colman (Australia), Mickey Bushell (GB), Jade Jones (GB) and Jamie Carter (GB).
