Prestigious photography and film awards launched 22 Mar 2010

One of the region's most prestigious photographic awards, the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards is launched on 22 March aimed at discovering the region's hidden talent and encouraging creativity and vibrancy amongst photographers and film makers.

Tapping into the creative pulse of the region, the Port of Tyne launched Reflect in 2007 inviting all keen photographers to submit entries reflecting and capturing the essence of the river Tyne. The awards have now become a firm fixture in the region's cultural calendar and this year introduces a brand new category for film makers.

Reflect is bigger and better than ever with an impressive judging panel, a cash prize, and broadened horizons with which to capture on camera and film the splendour of the north east region and its people. For the first time this year there will be a new section ReflectFilm in association with Northern Film + Media. Budding film makers will be asked to submit pitches for a short film reflecting the river Tyne. The three shortlisted entries will then work with Northern Film + Media who will partner them with a local film production company to prepare, shoot and edit their films which will be shown at the awards dinner in September.

Following the huge popularity of the introduction of ReflectYouth for the under 16's last year, this category has been repeated and the organisers are delighted to announce that popular TV presenter Matt Baker, from Blue Peter and Country File will be judging this award.

Other judges include some of the region's leading figures in the world of art, culture and business. These are: Eve Stoner, Development Director, Blumilk, Geoff Hodgson Chair, North East Tourism Advisory Board, Kate Sussams, Director Bede's World and Tom Harvey, Chief Executive of Northern Film + Media.

The winning entries will receive a trophy and a cheque for £500 with the runners-up receiving vouchers for £50 with their trophy.

Last year's winner, 13 year old Jack Bucknall said:
"It felt great to win, photography is my main hobby and so many good photos were entered last year. Hopefully this will encourage more young photographers to enter this year. Winning the award was special and I'm already looking forward to defending my title again this year!"

Andrew Moffat, the Port of Tyne's CEO said:
"We've been delighted at the overall response to Reflect. It shows how important cultural life is to the people of the North East and it's fantastic for the Port to engage with the community in this way."
