Record breaking entries for Port of Tyne competition06 Oct 2011

Entries are now in for the Port of Tyne Reflect photo and film competition with a record breaking number of people having entered this year - a massive 104% up on last year.

Over 3,000 photos and films have been entered, showcasing amazing talent and creative energy. Selecting the finalists will be no mean feat for the top panel of judges, who include Geoff Wonfor, film and TV director and producer; Wayne Hemingway, designer; and Carol Malia, presenter of BBC's Look North.

Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of Tyne, says: "The Port is proud to support the arts, communities and business of North East England. The Reflect Awards is one of the ways we can give everyone the chance to get involved. The response has been incredible - more people of all ages than ever before have taken part. We are looking forward to the final exhibition which promises to be outstanding."

The Port of Tyne Reflect Awards was launched in 2007 as part of the Port's on-going community engagement programme. Since then the competition has captured the imagination of hundreds of people across the country all keen to portray the places, people and environment of the North East. This year the competition was also promoted on Facebook and Twitter attracting interest and comment from across the globe.

The Port of Tyne Reflect Awards evening will be held at The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in November where prizes will be announced. Finalists will be given the opportunity to have their work exhibited in the gallery space for up to six weeks and at other venues across the region. This year there is the added prestige of having this work displayed during the latter stages of the prestigious Turner Prize competition.
