REFLECTING INSPIRATION IN THE NORTH EAST12 Sep 2012
Needle-woman Dorothy Bryan couldn't wait to get her sewing box out when she came across a winning photo from Port of Tyne's Reflect competition in 2007.
Dorothy from Tynemouth was so inspired by one of the winners from 2007 that she decided to recreate the photo called ‘Crazy Mirrors' by Steve Crawford in embroidery.
Dorothy said: "I've been embroidering as a hobby for a while and when I picked up a copy of the Port's Reflect Album - the photos from the competition immediately caught my eye. There isn't a more famous image of Tyneside than the Tyne Bridge, and I liked the distortion in the photo created by the reflection in the windows of the SAGE Gateshead."
The Port of Tyne Reflect Awards is one of the UK's biggest photo and film competitions and it has been leading the way for the past six years in capturing the image of North East England.
Photographer Steve Crawford from West Moor, said: "I was surprised to hear that Dorothy had embroidered the image of my photo and really pleased. I think it looks fantastic and it's great that something like the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards can inspire so much imagination.
"I'm entering the competition again this year and it would be good to think that other people could be inspired just like Dorothy."
Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said: "The Reflect Awards were created as part of our commitment to the region - we wanted to develop something that captured the essence of the region that could be inspirational and encourage creativity."
Reflect has a world-wide following and over 3,000 photos and films were entered in 2011 - however the creative energy created by the competition has grown to inspire more photographers and film makers.
The competition deadline is fast approaching and entries are flying in thick and fast but there is still time to enter before the closing date, 28 September. For the chance to win £500 in each category, visit www.portoftyne.co.uk/reflect.
