Romance on the Tyne16 Apr 2012

LOVE is in the air on the River Tyne, as teacher Ian Woodcock from Newcastle proposed to his sweetheart at the top of the Swing Bridge.

Brian Reeve, Port of Tyne Chief Technical Officer said: "The Port of Tyne is often asked for advice on some unusual marine engineering projects, but this was a little different and I am pleased we were able to help on this occasion".

Ian Woodcock, 29, of Newcastle first contacted the Port of Tyne seeking permission to propose to his girlfriend Rachael Watson, 31, back in January and had been waiting for the right moment. He chose half term and a night out in Newcastle before taking Rachael to the Swing Bridge and popping the question.
Luckily for Ian, Rachael said the all-important ‘yes' and they celebrated by admiring their view of the River Tyne with a glass of champagne.

Both teachers Ian and Rachael met at work, and have been together for just over a year.

Rachael said: "I just couldn't believe it, I was stunned. I'm so happy; the only word that came to mind was of course yes!

"We had been on a lovely night out and because my favourite view of Newcastle is from the Swing Bridge, I thought he was just messing about. I did not expect him to get down on one knee."

Ian said: "With Rachael's favourite view of Newcastle being the Bridges, I thought that the Swing Bridge would be the perfect setting. I was really nervous leading up to it but I knew it would all be worth it.

"I am delighted that the Port of Tyne made it happen and for making it as memorable as possible for us".
