SWING BRIDGE LIGHTS UP 30 Aug 2013

This Sunday (1 September), the Port of Tyne's Swing Bridge in Newcastle will be illuminated in red to support Blood Cancer Awareness Month.

The event on Sunday coincides with a 1-mile walk along the quayside to help build awareness of the disease and is being organised by the Bright Red charity based at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Gateshead's Millennium Bridge will also be turning red and over 250 people are expected to join the walk, each holding glow sticks to signify the awareness building campaign.

Brian Reeve, Port of Tyne's Chief Technical Officer, said: "We were happy to help by creating the right effect for the event and as we have been testing lighting systems on the bridge it wasn't too difficult to arrange."

The Swing Bridge will turn on the lights and be bathed in red light from 8:30pm to 10pm on Sunday.

Mark Thompson, Chief Executive of Bright Red, said: "Nearly 30,000 people this year will be given the devastating news that they have a blood cancer.

"We are really grateful for the support shown by the Port of Tyne in helping to light up the Swing Bridge it is a wonderful way to launch the UK's first Blood Cancer Awareness Month."

Registration to join the walk takes place from 7pm this Sunday at the BALTIC café in Gateshead and anyone is welcome to come along and join in - for further information please visit brightred.org.uk.
