Tall Ship ‘Stavros Niarchos' is preparing for a fleeting visit to the Tyne on Friday 2nd July. Stavros Niarchos has 6 salaried crew and 13 experienced volunteers; the remaining crew of 48 is made up of young people who are looking for a voyage of adventure.

The ‘Stavros Niarchos' has 2 masts and 18 sails, and will be berthing at Newcastle Quays for 3 days before sailing to London. The Ship is operated by The Tall Ships Youth Trust, a charity dedicated to the personal development of young people through crewing sail training vessels.

The Port of Tyne will receive a further Tall Ship, the ‘Lord Nelson' on Monday 5th July. The Lord Nelson is managed by The Jubilee Sailing Trust, a registered charity whose mission is to promote the integration of people of all physical abilities through the challenge and adventure of sailing on the open sea.

The Lord Nelson also has 2 masts and 18 sails, crewed by 8 permanent staff and 35 Guiding members aged between 14-26, and is taking part in the Ultimate Tall Ships Adventure as part of Girlguiding UK's Centenary celebrations.

Ruth Charles from Girlguiding UK said "We are very excited about our Centenary voyage, it really is a wonderful and unique opportunity for our members and we are delighted that the Port of Tyne is supporting the Girl Guides by waiving pilotage and port fees. The ship will be berthed at Newcastle Quays and is scheduled to set sail on Thursday 8th July".

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer at the Port of Tyne adds, "The Port is always delighted to welcome Tall Ships, and is pleased to support the Tall Ships Youth Trust and Jubilee Sailing Trust. With a reputation of being home to some of the friendliest people in the country, NewcastleGateshead also has many interesting attractions and both crews can be sure of a warm welcome during their short break on Tyneside".
