THE GREAT AND THE GOOD 11 Sep 2015

The Port of Tyne's sponsorship of the Great North Run Millionth celebrations continues to extend beyond the celebration event last year through support of a year-long arts exhibition, and sees the Port of Tyne enter a team of runners in the greatest half marathon on earth.

Seventeen runners will be pulling on their Port of Tyne running vests to hit the ground running from Newcastle to South Shields.

The team have been raising funds for four lifesaving charities: The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, Cancer Connections, the RNLI and Cancer Research UK and hope to raise a target of £5,000.

Fundraising champions have been organising dress down days, hair-raising bad hair days, bake sales and a raffle with prizes generously donated by businesses and friends of the Port.

Andrew Moffat, Port of Tyne Chief Executive Officer, said: "We were delighted to support the Great North Run Millionth Runner celebrations and the Great North Culture programme which runs all through this year.  It's another great event that brings visitors to the North East and showcases the wealth of culture, sport and leisure attractions the region has to offer.

"We've supported our colleagues who are running with training and fitness sessions and many others have been busy fund raising.  We will be supporting them and cheering the team along the route all the way to the finish line."

The Port's team of seventeen includes race veteran Jim Barker who has run every Great North Run since the very first. The team captain Paul Ridley who has clocked up over 100 race miles this year is entering the Great North Run during his honeymoon. And the rest of the team hope to set personal bests or simply reach the finish in one piece.

The Port of Tyne's support of the Great North Run will culminate with the Great North Greats touring exhibition currently on display at the Discovery Museum until 18 October - telling the stories of individuals and communities connected to the run.
