The Late Shows gets in the swing of things16 May 2012

Celebrating its sixth birthday The Late Shows is back 18 and 19 May to give people their annual dose of after-dark access to Newcastle and Gateshead's most popular museums and cultural venues.

Behind the scenes at the Swing Bridge has proven to be a "sell out" with tours booked up well in advance.

Susan Wear, Director of Corporate Affairs at the Port of Tyne which is responsible for the Bridge, said: "This is a really exciting initiative and is always a fantastic event with the chance to see so many of our cultural assets in a very different light. We're very pleased to support this as it helps bring more people not only to the venues themselves but also to the surrounding businesses - cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops - so everyone wins."

This year a record 54 venues are opening their doors from 7pm until late to revellers on this legendary culture crawl.

With DJ sets, hands-on art activities, behind the scenes tours, open studios and short performances all featuring in the line-up, visitors of all ages will be spoilt for choice during this free weekend of late night culture.

Iain Watson, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums Director said: "The Late Shows has quintupled in size since the event first began in 2007. And it's wonderful that the Port of Tyne is opening the Swing Bridge and getting involved again this year."
