THE PORT OF TYNE DUCK RACE RETURNS – WITH A TWIST!23 Aug 2010

Last August, Metro Radio's Cash for Kids brought the inaugural Port of Tyne Duck Race to the region, and this year the event will provide even more colour to the summer calendar.

Huge crowds at last year's event raised more than £10,000 for disabled and disadvantaged children in the North East, as hordes of plastic ducks battled along the River Tyne to be the first under the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

On Sunday, August 29, with the support of main sponsors The Port of Tyne and the Northern Rock, the ducks are returning but instead of the traditional yellow with which we are all familiar, the Tyne will be covered with a carpet of bright pink ducks.

From 4pm, 5,000 pink ducks will be taking their maiden voyage down the River Tyne to compete for a family holiday courtesy of Co-operative Travel. The quickest quacker to storm the finishing line will win its owner the holiday, while smaller prizes will also be offered for those owners of lucky ducks who finish in second, third, fourth and fifth place.

Disney on Ice's very own Donald Duck will also be making a special guest appearance as the ducks set off to entertain the crowd in his own inimitable style.

Metro Radio's Nightowls presenter, Alan Robson MBE, commented: "The pink ducks are a fantastic addition to the race, and bring a real splash of colour to the Tyne. I am really looking forward to the event and hope everybody gets on board and buys a duck."

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer Port of Tyne says "The Port of Tyne Duck Race was a great talking point last year, and the Port is delighted to continue its backing of the event in 2010. This year again promises to be a huge success that will be a great benefit to Cash for Kids, supporting disadvantaged children right across the North East".

Anthony Mooney, Marketing Director at Northern Rock, added: "This is a fantastic event which as well as providing a fun family day out, will help countless young people in the region. We are proud to be able to support it."

Ducks are available for purchase at selected Northern Rock branches and at www.metroradio.co.uk/ducks and are priced at £5 each. Corporate duck packages are also available for purchase - call Cash for Kids on 0191 279 0247 for more information.

Metro Radio presenters will be at Baltic Square on August 29 playing music and giving away prizes from midday.
