Port of Tyne is pleased to announce the appointments of Dr Jonathan Hargreaves and Dr Alan Rutherford as Non-Executive Directors with effect from November 2010.

The award-winning Port at the heart of North East England is run by a Trust Board for the benefit of the stakeholders of the Port and the River Tyne.

Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, Chair of Port of Tyne said: "We are delighted to welcome to the Board two people who are so highly respected in their fields, both bringing a wealth of experience of running world-class businesses.

"There are exciting and challenging times ahead for Port of Tyne. These appointments strengthen the independent Non-Executive Board and will help us deliver the strategic direction for continued growth and development for the Port and the businesses it supports across the North East region."

Dr Alan Rutherford OBE is currently Non-Executive Chairman of NaREC, (National Renewable Energy Centre), the Northumberland-based centre of excellence for energy technologies, and is Chairman of the Energy Leadership Council for North East England.

An engineer and scientist with degrees from Sheffield and Newcastle universities, he has had leading roles in industry specialising in new energy technologies. He has served as a Non-Executive Board member and as an advisor to several national and international business, industry and enterprise organisations, including the Scottish Council for Development and Industry and the Scottish Co-investment Fund. He worked at Clarke Chapman (Gateshead) and at Cooksons (Willington Quay) before joining Scottish and Newcastle Breweries in 1971. Dr Rutherford joined the Board of United Distillers plc in 1994 and was awarded an OBE for services to the Scotch whisky industry.

He has been a Visiting Professor at Heriot Watt University and a member of the Advisory Board of Edinburgh University Management School and in 2007 he was appointed Visiting Professor at Newcastle University in the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Dr Jonathan Hargreaves CBE is a Non-Executive Director of British Waterways and Chair of British Waterways Scotland. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Water from 2002 to 2007, where he completely restructured the business and oversaw a £2bn investment programme.

In a distinguished career mainly developing the water industry he has successfully managed businesses of up to £1bn turnover and delivered large investment programmes in the UK and overseas of up to £2bn. He has achieved major change programmes delivering significant cost reductions and dramatic customer service improvements, and has supported the rapid growth of several start-up businesses.

Dr Hargreaves gained his PhD at Durham University and has held the posts of Chief Executive Officer of East of Scotland Water, Managing Director of Northumbrian Lyonnaise, Managing Director of Northumbrian Water and MD of Entec Europe Ltd, the international environmental and engineering consultancy.

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer of Port of Tyne, said: "Port of Tyne is one of the most successful Trust Ports in the UK and our aim is to ensure it remains a thriving, dynamic business supporting the economic growth of the North East region for the future. Our Board helps us make the decisions that ensure we stay ahead of the field, particularly in the new opportunities that are coming in renewable energy and offshore wind technology and in the consolidation and growth of our cargo, transport and distribution businesses.
"The addition of two new Board members of national standing in these areas is a coup for the Port and for the North East region."
