VOYAGER OF DISCOVERY COMES TO PORT OF TYNE 06 May 2014

The Port of Tyne welcomed the first cruise call of the season today when the Voyager sailed in to the region as part of its National Treasures of the British Isles cruise.

The 153m long Voyager arrived at 7am this morning from Portsmouth.

The 560 passengers will spend the day exploring; Hadrian's Wall, Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands, Cragside, Blanchland and Durham City Cathedral and Castle, amongst other treasures of the North East.

Last year the Port of Tyne welcomed a record 623,000 cruise and ferry passengers who added around £54m to the regional economy, supporting 1,700 jobs.

Steven Harrison, Port of Tyne's Chief Operating Officer, said: "The team at our award-winning International Passenger Terminal have been working hard to prepare for another busy cruise season and are ready to give the first cruise passengers on the Voyager a very warm welcome.

"There are 31 cruise ships expected to arrive at the Port of Tyne this year, some bringing visitors into the North East and others offering an easy to reach holiday right on the doorstep.  As the region's only passenger shipping gateway, the well-connected International Passenger Terminal at North Shields provides a comfortable and hassle-free start to a holiday or, for those visiting the Port, a memorable day's excursion."

The Port of Tyne's passenger terminal is well equipped to handle a wide variety of cruise calls and able to accommodate around 95% of the world's cruise ships at its purpose built cruise berth, Northumbrian Quay in North Shields.
