WORLDS LARGEST WIND TURBINE INSTALLATION VESSEL PLOTS COURSE FOR PORT OF TYNE 03 Oct 2012

The MPI Adventure - the world's largest wind turbine installation vessel, is heading to the Port of Tyne this week.

It has been commissioned by Narec, the National Renewable Energy Centre, to collect their 750t offshore anemometry structure ‘Met Mast' - which has been fitted with the latest technologies for measuring wind resource and collecting marine conditions and marine life data. It will be installed 3nm offshore of Blyth to measure the wind resource for the proposed Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Site.

MPI Adventure is currently being mobilised at MPI Offshore's base in Middlesbrough and is expected to arrive at the Port of Tyne on Thursday 4 October.

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer Port of Tyne, said: "The MPI Adventure is the world's most advanced wind turbine installation vessel and this operation demonstrates the capacity and full capabilities of the Port in handling and accommodating vessels servicing the offshore wind, oil and gas industry."

Described as the 'next generation' of wind turbine installation vessel, the MPI Adventure is 138.5m long and designed to transport, lift and install wind turbines and their foundations.

Once the vessel is correctly positioned, its six jackup legs will be lowered to the riverbed some 7m metres beneath the hull to create an anchored platform. Then the 104m 1,000 tonne capacity main crane will begin the job of lifting Met Mast onboard.

Met Mast's 635 tonne tripod foundation and 100 tonne platform will take approximately 18 hours to load and secure onboard the MPI Adventure in the biggest undertaking of its kind in the North East.

The MPI Adventure is expected to leave the Tyne later this week.
