Hallo and welcome to Tyne Writer

My name is Michael Chaplin, Writer-In-Residence for the Port of Tyne 2009-2012

The purpose of the residency is:

  • To celebrate the history and culture of Tyneside by focusing on the river that runs through and made it what it is today.
  • To stimulate pieces of writing in various forms about the Tyne and the communities that line its banks, some by myself, but most, hopefully, by the people of Tyneside.
  • To provide, via this website and others means of publication, a resource base for all those interested in the past, present and future of the Tyne.

I hope you enjoy visiting this site, reading what the people of Tyneside have written about their river.
I also hope you feel moved to join them!
In July 2011 I was joined by artist Birtley Aris, photographer Charles Bell, poet Christy Ducker on a walk around the Port of Tyne from South Shields Pier to Tynemouth Pier via Wylam Bridge.
The walk inspired me to write a new book celebrating the River Tyne.
