BG Freight Line
Rotterdam-based BG Freight Line provides a comprehensive range of logistics services to and from Ireland, the UK and continental Europe. These services include door-to-door shipping utilising their own fleet of containers and feedering of containers to and from both hub and feeder ports for all types of containerised cargo. BG operates a fleet of 23 container ships.
CHALLENGE: BG Freight Line is a vital link in the international, sustainable, time-critical supply chains of a huge variety of customers, from manufacturers to retailers. Its greatest daily challenge lies in keeping its ships moving, even at times of peak volumes – this depends on highly efficient, rapid turnarounds in port, as well as flexibility.
SOLUTION: BG Freight Line began operating at the Port of Tyne in 2013. Its fixed schedule feeder service connecting South Shields with Felixstowe and Rotterdam provides reliable connections and a cost-effective, ‘green’ supply chain option that eliminates unnecessary road and rail miles. Amongst its volumes – containers full of parts for Nissan and Komatsu, tea for Tetley, Ringtons and Keith Spicer, household goods for Argos and a wide range of consumer goods for JML.
OUTCOME: Volumes on BG Freight Line’s services into the Port of Tyne continue to increase. As well as imported goods, BG carries significant export volumes, including autoparts and a variety of recovered materials. When volumes peak at short notice, the Port of Tyne has the flexibility and responsiveness to cover increased volumes on existing services or to accommodate additional vessel calls.
"Our feeder service is highly successful, environmentally friendly and cost effective. Our relationship with the Port of Tyne is perfect – it’s very important to us."
