Case Study

DFDS

DFDS is the world's leading ferry operator, as voted by members of the public at the 2017 World Travel Awards, and has been connecting Britain and Europe since 1866. It operates in two divisions - DFDS and DFDS Logistics, and it services provide vital links for both passengers and freight.

THE BACKGROUND: The Port of Tyne is the most northerly UK port for seaborne passenger traffic to the continent. Our catchment area extends beyond the North East to the North West and Scotland and there is also high demand for roll-on/roll-off freight capacity. DFDS operates a daily service between the International Passenger Terminal at North Shields and Ijmuiden, in the Port of Amsterdam.

THE SOLUTION: DFDS has operated its service to Ijmuiden since 1995. The Port of Tyne provides an easy access port and a welcoming experience for passengers. As well as carrying thousands of passengers a year on holidays, short breaks, mini cruises and business trips, DFDS carries significant volumes of freight on the service, which is particularly important for time-sensitive cargoes such as flowers and other perishable items.

THE OUTCOME: DFDS' North Shields - Ijmuiden service has been a remarkable success story and has become one of its most important routes. Well over half a million passengers use the service every year. The service provides a gateway into the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and has provided a major boost for the region's economy, bringing employment, business and visitors to the North East and supporting trade.

"The nice thing about the Port of Tyne is that it's an easy access port. The terminal is just the right size, offering a laid-back, welcoming experience. We have been working with the Port of Tyne for a long time and have a trustful and reliable relationship."
