Case Study

Tetley

Tetley is the second largest tea brand in the world, with a presence in more than 40 countries. Millions of cups of Tetley tea are enjoyed every day; the brand has gone from strength to strength since joining Tata Global Beverages in 2000.

THE CHALLENGE: Tetley imports raw tea from more than 20 different countries, in containers, for blending, processing and packing at its Eaglescliffe factory in North East England. Tea requires particularly careful handling and storing, and Tetley needs a smooth flow of raw tea to meet production needs.

THE SOLUTION: Tetley’s containers are delivered direct from the ship to a specialist quayside warehouse for unpacking and storing by a team with expert knowledge in handling tea. The port is responsible for picking, loading and delivering tea to the factory, according to its day-to-day needs.

THE OUTCOME: This solution allows for containers to be packed full enough to be overweight which is very cost-efficient. Tetley has brought 100% of its imports through the Tyne since 2006.
