Case Study

Volkswagen Group

The Volkswagen Group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of automobiles and commercial vehicles and the largest carmaker in Europe, encompassing 12 brands from seven European countries. With its programme 'TOGETHER - Strategy 2025', the group is laying the foundations for becoming a global leader of sustainable mobility.

THE CHALLENGE: Demand in the UK for Volkswagen Group vehicles is extremely high, and has continued to grow. More than 85% of its UK imports come from Emden, Germany. The group requires import points with flexibility, berth capacity, expert handling and high-quality, secure storage, as close as possible to its dealer network.

THE SOLUTION: The Port of Tyne has been working with Volkswagen Group UK for nearly 15 years, providing berthing facilities able to accommodate their whole range of car carriers. The Port developed the 48-acre Tyne Distribution Centre on the north bank of the river which now processes more than 90,000 vehicles per year. Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle marques are stored ready for distribution to the group's dealer network around the UK.

THE OUTCOME: Port of Tyne has proved an ideal partner for Volkswagen Group, which has described the Tyne's location as perfect for the area it serves. From the Port, Volkswagen Group vehicles make their way by road to dealerships across the North East of England and into Scotland.

"The Port of Tyne is an excellent automotive terminal and has really good facilities. We have a really good working relationship and, from both parties' point of view, we know we can work well together."
