BUILDING BUSINESS AT WORLD-WIDE SHIPPING CONFERENCE27 Apr 2012

THE Port of Tyne is sailing off to do business at the UK's largest shipping and transport exhibition.

Each year the UK and Ireland's leading distribution providers - covering sea, road, rail and aviation - gather for the industry's largest event, Multimodal, held in Birmingham from May 1 to May 3.

Among the 4,000 visitors expected to attend are the country's major manufacturers, retailers and importers who are looking for solutions to their transport and supply chain needs.

And the Port of Tyne, with one of the fastest growing container terminals in the UK, is gearing up to respond to increasing customer requirements. Planned improvements to the container terminal include a new £6 million Liebherr Panamax gantry crane that will significantly enhance the Port's capability, enabling the Port to handle larger container vessels and improve efficiency and reliability.

Ian Gibson, Port of Tyne Director of Logistics, said: "The crane is the first phase of an estimated £10 million injection which includes container storage capacity, additional lifting equipment and new IT systems. This is further to £15 million invested in warehousing at the Port in recent years." The new investment is expected to bring 30 new jobs.

The Port of Tyne's customers already include many blue-chip companies such as Tata Global Beverages, Nissan, VW Group, Morgan Stanley, Rio Tinto Alcan and Drax as well as the retail sector including JML, Home Retail Group, Jackel International and Co Op Clothing.

In 2011 increased customer demand helped drive up the number of containers handled at the Port of Tyne by 25% and boosted container volumes to a record 71,000 teu*.

John Tye, Port of Tyne Commercial Director, Logistics, said: "We have built a reputation for customer service and value and this investment decision will enable us to attract additional customers and routes as well as develop other opportunities with our current customers.

"The Multimodal event is a great platform for this because the senior management and decision makers from some of the world's biggest manufacturers and retailers will be attending, and many have already said they want to talk to us about how we can help them.

"With our strategic location in North East England we already cover all of the UK with our distribution service and we have shipping connections to five continents. The new developments will help us expand our services even further. One growth area for us is the Baltic region and we'll be focussing on building business there this year".

Graeme Hardie, Port of Tyne Head of Operations, Logistics, added "We pride ourselves on our service flexibility and relationships with our customers. This investment allows us to deliver even better value for our customers and demonstrates our commitment to continually improve and grow the services we provide".

Through its regular feeder connections provided by Feederlink and Unifeeder, Port of Tyne provides direct links to Rotterdam, Felixstowe, Grangemouth, Hamburg, Gdynia, Ust Luga (Russia) and other Baltic ports.

The Port of Tyne can offer road, rail and sea transport solutions tailored to individual customer's requirements.
