Port of Tyne Launches UK’s First Site-Wide Private Network

The Port of Tyne, in collaboration with BT and Ericsson, has launched a groundbreaking 4G and 5G private network, making it the first smart port in the UK to deploy site-wide standalone connectivity. This initiative aligns with the Port's goal to become a leading smart port focusing on safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The private 5G wireless network will enable various applications, including autonomous vehicles, survey drones, smart surveillance, artificial intelligence, and extended reality. Initial use cases, starting in November, involve automatic number plate recognition for secure vehicle access and AI-driven container inspection. The Port aims to integrate these advanced technologies to meet customer demands and transition into an eco-friendly smart port.

Leading the way for green shipping corridors in the UK.

The Clean Tyne Shipping Corridor project is a collaboration between the Port of Tyne, Arup, Connected Places Catapult, EDF Energy R&D UK, Lloyd’s Register, Newcastle University and the North East LEP.Green shipping corridors, which use zero-emission fuels and technologies along maritime trade routes between two (or more) ports, can encourage the early and rapid adoption of alternatives to petroleum-based fuels in the maritime industry.The Clean Tyne Shipping Corridor project is a feasibility study to establish a green shipping corridor from the Port of Tyne with the vision to join up with the European Green Corridors Network.
